2/17/21 @ 6:45 p.m. - Beginning Monday, February 22, 2021, a daily road closure on Amelia Road at Simmons Road will take place from 9am-4pm for approximately one week. AJ Johns, Inc., will be making repairs to the rear entrance at the Lakeside at Amelia Island Assisted Living Facility. The work will include shoulder grading and grassing, concrete sidewalk and valley gutter removal and replacement, and milling/asphalt overlay on Amelia Rd.
The attached map shows the detour around the road closure. AJ Johns will ensure 24/7 access to homeowners within the road closure while the detour is in place. Residents of Lakeside will be required to use the main entrance from Amelia Island Parkway. The first project, the Western Nassau Heritage Preservation Vision Book, was selected in the Planning & Growth Management category. The Nassau County Conservation Land Acquisition and Management Program was selected in the Environmental Stewardship Category.
Beth Payne, Chief Executive Director for the Northeast Florida Regional Council, attended today's Board of County Commissioner's meeting and presented the County with two plaques. Planning & Zoning Board member, Linda Morris, was invited to accept the award for the Western Nassau Heritage Preservation Book. Ms. Morris served on the Western Nassau Heritage Preservation Committee and has been credited with keeping the Committee on task and ensuring they succeeded in their goal of adopting a vision book that will guide the future of western Nassau. Staff members from the Department of Planning & Economic Opportunity were in attendance to accept the award for the Conservation Land Acquisition and Management Program. Ms. Payne stated, "These awards are showcasing the work that you (the county) are doing now. These innovative, forward thinking, public engagement related activities are valued. Surrounding counties value it as well and it will be immolated across the region". Thank you Ms. Payne for visiting with us today! We truly appreciate all their hard work and dedication. 2/17/21 @ 11:55 a.m. - In honor of Black History Month, the Library will host a special virtual event on Thursday, February 18th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. regarding African American Culture. The program will be led by Dr. Johnetta Cole, distinguished educator and museum professional. She currently serves as the Chair and Seventh President of the National Council of Negro Women. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library, the Association for the Study and Preservation of African American History in Nassau County, and the Nassau County Public Library System. The virtual meeting link will be added to the Library's website prior to the event. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 2/17/21 @ 10:40 a.m. - As of Tuesday, February 16, 2021, 13,799 COVID-19 vaccinations have been administered in Nassau County. Of those, 7,230 have received their first dose and 6,569 have completed their vaccination series with two doses. This information is updated on the Florida Department of Health website daily. Below are a few photos taken at last Friday's vaccination event at the Yulee Gymnasium. Thank you again to OMNI for continuing to allow us to use their golf carts to transport residents to/from the parking area to the gymnasium. If you've already gone elsewhere to get your vaccination, please notify Emergency Management at (904) 548-0900 so they can remove your name from the list. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 2/16/21 @ 3:30 p.m. - The Board of County Commissioners adopted their first Conservation Land Acquisition and Management (CLAM) Plan on January 25, 2021. This plan summarizes the collected goals that have been expressed by the County Commissioners, County staff, and the general public and provides guidance in selection of lands to be acquired by the County and set aside for conservation. Lands nominated for consideration will be reviewed by a CLAM Committee, prior to being submitted to the Board of County Commissioners for consideration. The County is currently seeking volunteers to serve on the CLAM Committee. Candidates at a minimum should have skills, expertise or demonstrable experience that relate to the acquisition of conservation lands, either in: • natural resource management and biology; • agriculture and forestry; • community planning; • environmental engineering or civil engineering where their work has been in stormwater or green infrastructure projects; and • environmental regulations, land use law, or commercial real estate in so far that it has dealt in vacant, rural lands. The ideal candidates will have experience in at least two of the above categories, or ten years of experience in at least one. You must be a Nassau County resident. To apply, please click here.
