4/19/18 @ 10:30 a.m. - The County and the City of Fernandina Beach have been jointly working with CityScape Consultants on a telecommunications master plan. The Telecommunications Master Plan is a County-wide (including municipalities) Plan that identifies and assesses existing wireless communication facilities, determines gaps in existing coverage and provides recommendations for design and siting of future facilities. The analysis will facilitate the development of a wireless telecommunications network that is efficient and will meet the future needs of Nassau County. The purpose of the plan is to provide adequate network service while minimizing visual impacts of the telecommunications infrastructure and maintaining the aesthetics of the community. The plan will also serve as a guide for developing planning policies for future wireless infrastructure that is compliant with state and federal regulations. The Draft Master Plan is available for review. Please click here to review the plan and submit any comments by APRIL 30. -Adrienne Burke Department of Planning & Economic Opportunity Nassau County

In an effort to provide a better road surface that will last longer, the Board has begun using an alternative surface treatment called double chip seal. Chip seal applications enhance road safety by providing good skid resistance, an anti-glare surface during wet weather, and an increased reflective surface for night driving.
At the April 9, 2018 meeting, the Board identified the dirt roads which would receive the double chip seal treatment during this fiscal year. They are as follows:

Gopher tortoises become active in the spring as they search for food and a mate, therefore you are more likely to see them now. Just in time for Florida Gopher Tortoise Day! The FFWC would like to remind everyone that it is illegal to disturb or harm gopher turtles, their burrows or their eggs. If you see a gopher tortoise or their half-moon shaped burrow entrance, it's best to leave them alone. You can help a tortoise cross a road by picking it up and placing it in the direction it was headed, but don't ever put the tortoise in your vehicle or in the water. It is a land animal and needs a sandy, sunny habitat to survive. On the Gopher Tortoise Day website, you can find many resources including guides to living with gopher tortoises and ideas for kids' activities including how to build a burrow. And if you're a fan of the gopher tortoise, help spread the word on conserving this threatened species whose burrows are also homes to hundreds of animals including the eastern indigo snake, gopher frog and Florida mouse. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 4/9/18 @ 4:10 p.m. - The Nassau County Planning & Zoning Board will hold a public hearing on proposed changes to the Amelia Island Tree Ordinance.
