5/23/19 @ 8:15 a.m. - Keep Nassau Beautiful, Kayak Amelia and the Amelia Island Beach and Marine Life Conservancy are sponsoring a beach cleanup on Tuesday, May 28th from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Anyone interested in helping clean the beach and shoreline should meet at one of these beach access points: Main Beach, Seaside Park, Peters Point or American Beach. Buckets/totes, trash bags, and trash grabbers will be provided, however you may wish to bring your own gloves, hats, sunglasses, sunblock, water, etc.

UPCOMING MEETING OF BEACH COMMUNITY WORKING GROUP Nassau County, Florida, May 22, 2019 - On December 19, 2018, the Board of County Commissioners formed a Beach Community Working Group consisting of Mike Mullin, County Manager/County Attorney; Taco Pope, Director of Planning & Economic Opportunity; Doug Podiak, Facilities Maintenance Director; Gil Langley, Executive Director of the Tourist Development Council; Butch Osborne, Director of Operations for the Sheriff’s Office; Mac Morriss, Ex-Officio Member; and Lowell Hall, Ex-Officio Member. The group has been directed to review current beach related Ordinances and use of the beach and to make recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners as to any updates or amendments that need to be made. The group has been seeking the public’s input and participation to assist in their efforts to ensure that beach related Ordinances are consistent with the community’s use of the beach. To date, five meetings have been held. The next meeting will take place on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. in the Commission Chambers located at 96135 Nassau Place, Yulee, FL 32097. The Committee will discuss additional meeting dates at the May 30th meeting and a new schedule will be published accordingly. From the Sheriff’s Office: NCSO Deputy Mark Hunter was honored by State Attorney Melissa Nelson at the 2nd Annual State Attorney Awards Ceremony in Jacksonville. Deputy Hunter was recognized for his bravery in entering a burning home multiple times searching for the unconscious occupant. Deputy Hunter located her on the kitchen floor and pulled her outside. Kristen had been working with Nassau County since November 2015 and coordinated many of the County Extension Office's youth outreach programs, youth day camps and resident camps, and was the leader of the 4-H County Council teaching teens about citizenship and community service. She led many youth educational programs including the YUM (Youth Understanding MyPlate) Program in Nassau's elementary schools and the Youth Leadership Nassau Program. Kristen was an exceptional employee who touched everyone she came in contact with through her love of 4-H. She will be greatly missed by her co-workers, Extension volunteers, and the youth she mentored. Kristen leaves behind her husband, Chase, her mother and father, Gloria and Dwayne Glover, a brother and a sister. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 5/17/19 @ 2:20 p.m. - On Wednesday, May 15, 2019, the Board of County Commissioners approved a Resolution commending individuals, businesses and animal welfare groups for the assistance and support provided to Nassau County Animal Services. Examples include donation of food and supplies to the shelter, financial contributions to assist with operating expenses, hosting of adoption and fundraising events, fostering of pets, and donation of health care services such as vaccinations, spay/neutering, and any other medical treatment needed.
The collaboration of Nassau County Animal Services and outside entities allows the County to succeed in its mission of protecting vulnerable animals and helping them find loving and permanent homes. Mr. Pope is a life-long resident of Nassau County with fourteen years of professional experience in the public sector serving as both a technical practitioner and administrator for local government in the State of Florida. Mr. Pope has held several positions with Nassau County since being hired in 2005 including serving the last three years as the Director of Planning and Economic Opportunity. In that position, Mr. Pope has been instrumental in fostering a collaborative approach to community formation through meaningful public engagement, transparency and a holistic approach to quality of life. Mr. Pope holds two bachelor’s degrees from the University of North Florida, a BBA in Business Management and a BBA in Transportation and Logistics. Mr. Pope undertook his graduate studies through Florida Gulf Coast University as part of their Master of Public Administration (MPA) program where he concentrated in Planning and Environmental Policy. Mr. Pope also holds professional accreditation through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and is a full member of the International City/County Managers Association and Florida City/County Management Association, a member of the American Planning Association, and the Urban Land Institute. As Assistant County Manager, Mr. Pope will be responsible for directly handling matters of organizational importance on behalf of the County Manager, supporting the County Manager on various programs and governmental services, and assisting in development and implementation of County goals, project priorities, and programs. He will also act as the County Manager in his absence. Mr. Pope was an excellent candidate for the position given his experience in local government, education, and familiarity with the community, residents, local policies and the challenges that are ahead.
