5/20/21 @ 10:00 a.m. - Keep Nassau Beautiful has received results from the Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Event held on April 17, 2021. While we previously reported that a total of 358 vehicles delivered items, we were waiting on the total weight of items recycle by type.
It has been reported that a total of 49,487 lbs. of materials were collected. This is an increase of 15,713 lbs. from the December 2020 event. The most common items collected were: Latex Paint; E-Scrap Materials (TVs, computers); and Alkyd Paint and Used Oil and Lubricants. As a reminder, latex paint and electronics are accepted year-round at the Convenience and Recycling Center located at 46026 Landfill Road, Callahan. Attached is a PowerPoint presentation showing a complete breakdown of materials collected, vehicle counts by zip code, and a chart showing how this event has grown over time. The event also included a food drive for the Barnabas food pantry. We are happy to report that over 600 lbs. of food was collected! A huge thank you to everyone who made a donation to help individuals in need. A big thank you as well to residents who participated to ensure harmful materials were keep out of the landfill, as well as to the employees and volunteers who worked to bring us another successful recycling event. If you have any questions, please contact Keep Nassau Beautiful at (904) 261-0165 or email [email protected]. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 5/18/21 @ 9:15 a.m. - At the Monday, May 10, 2021 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners approved Resolution No. 2021-063 proclaiming the week of May 16 through May 22, 2021 as Emergency Medical Services Week in Nassau County. Both Nassau County Fire Rescue and the City of Fernandina Beach Fire Department were in attendance at the meeting to accept the Resolution on behalf of their departments. EMS Week is celebrated nationally to recognize the vital public service provided by emergency medical professionals who work tirelessly to keep residents safe. This includes first responders, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, emergency medical dispatchers, firefighters, police officers, educators, administrators, pre-hospital nurses, emergency room nurses, emergency physicians and other out of hospital medical care providers. This virtual summer program will navigate through healthy living, leadership and science based programs through an array of fun and educational adventures.
Each 4-H Adventure has been designed by 4-H agents and specialists from around the State. Some involve regular scheduled meetings while others can be completed at the participant's own pace. Programs include: Creator Guild: July 5 - July 30 Ages: 13-18 Build your appreciation for music, theater, writing, visual arts or all of the above. You do not need to be an artist of have any talent to participate. All you need is a love of arts! Seed to Food/Plant to Plate: June 3 - July 29 Ages: 5-13 This program focuses on exploring plant science by investigating functions of each plant part; determining the role plants play in our lives; and encouraging mastery for growing plants. Exploring Veterinary Science Camp: June 21-June 25 Ages: 11-18 This camp provides insight into the world of veterinary science starting in small, large and exotic species. Virtual Tailgate Camp: June 14-July 3 Ages: 11-18 Learn about the Florida 4-H Tailgating Contest and explore food and fire safety, equipment, meat selection, seasonings, and create your own recipe graphic designs. US/Iraq Cultural Exchange: June 7-July 14 Ages: 14-18 Engage in a six-week virtual exchange program with students from Florida, Kentucky and Iraq in increasing the understanding of your own culture while exploring the culture of others. This program requires an application to enroll. Intro to Animal Sciences: June 14-June 18 Ages: 8-18 Learn more about owning your own cow, pig, chicken, goat, lamb or steer, including how to feed the animal, basic healthcare for animals, and recognizing a healthy animal. Culinary Arts Virtual Camp: June 14-June 17 Ages: 8-18 This program provides educational videos introducing food safety, kitchen skills, kitchen safety, recipe preparation and recipes youth can prepare at home (under adult supervision of course) Exploring 4-H Cloverbud Adventures: June 14-June 18 Ages: 5-7 This program will engage youth on a journey that leads them through a variety of fun and educational activities related to an assortment of 4-H project areas. Effective May 21, 2021, the County recycling bins located on Bailey Road in Fernandina Beach will be relocated to the Public Works Facility at 86200 Gene Lasserre Blvd. in Yulee. This is the result of Nassau County no longer being the owner of the property on Bailey Rd. and the Public Works Department being moved to a centralized location within the County. Attached is an aerial map outlining the recycling bin’s new location. The recycling bins can be accessed directly from Courtney Isles Way and will be open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week beginning the afternoon of Friday, May 21st. We apologize for any inconvenience. If you have any questions, please contact the Solid Waste Department at (904) 530-6700. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 5/13/21 @ 5:00 p.m. At the Monday, May 10, 2021 meeting, the Board approved Resolution No. 2021-061, proclaiming the week of May 16th - May 22nd as National Public Works Week in Nassau County, Florida. Public Works professionals focus on infrastructure, facilities and services that are of vital importance to sustainable and resilient communities and to the public health, quality of life, and well-being of the people in Nassau County. Public Works includes construction and maintenance of roads, landfill maintenance, garbage collection, access to public facilities, availability of public water and sewer, construction of sidewalks, and more! All pets are fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped.
You can also volunteer at the shelter to help with daily chores such as cleaning kennels, walking dogs, or just providing extra snuggles to keep the animals comforted while they wait to meet their new best friend.
