9/11/17 @ 9:10 p.m. - Roadway Update! A lot of trees are down along US-17 causing major obstruction. Crews will not be able to complete removal this evening. The SOUTH END NASSAU SOUND BRIDGE IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!
There is a lot of flooding througout the county, especially on the island and the west side where roads are so severely flooded that officials still haven't been able to do a good assessment. Public works staff will be out there until at least midnight tonight trying to clear major road blockages caused by trees. Approximately 2500 residents near Thomas Creek and the St Mary's River who signed up for citizen alerts were notified today to expected further flooding over the next two weeks due to GA watershed. We will keep sharing information as it's received. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 9/11/17 @ 7:15 p.m. - A lot of you have been sending messages asking about the bridge. Please note the bridge never did close! However, officials are urging you to stay off the roads while they work to clear downed trees and power lines. It is not safe to be traveling around town. Public works staff are working hard to clear the roads but it is taking time! Please be patient as they work to improve conditions to ensure safety of our citizens.
-Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 9/11/17 @ 6:03 p.m. - There are still a lot of downed trees , power lines, and standing water in all areas of the county which is making it difficult for public safety employees to access all areas. There are currently 40,000+ homes without power. Utility companies are working as hard as they can to get power restored however they have indicated it may be 24-48 hours before it's completely restored due to damaged transmission lines and transformers.
There is still a Curfew in affect tonight from 6:00 pm- 8:00 am. Please be aware this is for your safety! It is not safe to be our driving around and curfews help law enforcement observe suspicious activities. County administrative offices will now be closed on Wednesday (in addition to Monday and Tuesday which was announced last week). County staff will still be hard at work cleaning up the affects of Hurricane Irma. If you need additional information, please contact the Emergency Operations Center at 904-548-0900. They are in constant communication with county officials, public works staff and emergency personnel so they have the most current information. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 9/11/17 @ 4:15 p.m. - Sorry for the delay in updates. Communication has been spotty. Here's the latest from Emergency Management:
Responders are busy answering calls for help from those who did not evacuate; roads are very dangerous. Hecksher bridge is under water. The Shave bridge is structurally sound but roads on either side have water and debris. Power is out on 95% of the island and many other areas in the county - damaged transmission lines (not just down power lines and transformers) are going to take quite a while to repair. There is wide-spread flooding and trees/debris in roads in Callahan, Yulee, and Hilliard. First Responders are asking residents to PLEASE STAY OFF THE ROADS and DON'T TRY TO RETURN TO THE ISLAND so they have time to complete rescue operation and render neighborhoods safe. Resources and public services (medical, fire, fuel, food) are extremely scarce on the island and many other areas in Nassau County. If you are in a safe place, please Stay There and wait for official word that it is safe for everyone to return. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 9/10/17 @ 11:25 p.m. - Warning message from JEA:
