9/21/21 @ 3:30 p.m. - Deputy Eric Oliver was killed in the line of duty on November 22, 2016. His daughter, Shelby, was only 6 at the time. Shelby is now in 5th grade and participates in her school's safety patrol. Safety Patrol is currently selling candy bars for their annual trip to Washington, D.C. Shelby is especially excited about going to Washington, D.C. because her Dad's name is on the Police Memorial Wall and she will get to see it in person!
On Friday, September 17th, Shelby made arrangements to visit the Sheriff's Office to sell candy bars to the department. What Shelby didn't know was that the Sheriff's Office had already begun collecting money in hopes to raise enough to pay for both hers and her mom's ticket. Upon arriving, Shelby was surprised to learn that not only had the $1,600 been raised for their tickets, an additional $3,600 had been donated by Sheriff and Fire/Rescue personnel. The additional funds have been donated to the Safety Patrol to assist with tickets for the remaining 29 students. Board of County Commissioner employees donated an additional $250 on Tuesday, September 21st, which will also be given to the Safety Patrol. Thank you to the Sheriff's Office for coordinating this fundraiser for Shelby. And a big thank you to all the County personnel who donated money for this wonderful cause. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 9/21/21 @ 8:30 a.m. - At the Monday, September 13th meeting, the Board approved Resolution No. 2021-174 proclaiming the month of September 2021 as Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month in Nassau County, FL. September is known around the United States as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and is intended to help promote awareness surrounding each of the suicide prevention resources available in our community. The simple goal is to learn how to help those around us talk about suicide without increasing their risk of harm. Suicide can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, race, orientation, income level, religion or background and according to the Center for Disease Control, 47,500 deaths in 2019 were the result of suicide, making it the 10th leading cause of death among adults in the U.S. Kayla Woodle, Mobile Response Team/Suicide Prevention Team Leader for Starting Point Behavior Health stated, "It's absolutely vital that we talk abut these difficult subjects. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death and each of those deaths is a tragedy". She challenged everyone to talk to their family members and ask how they're doing. A simple phone call, message, handshake, or hug can go a long way in making someone realize is not the answer. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please seek help immediately! Starting Point has a variety of programs and services available to assist you. Contact them directly at (904) 225-8280. You can also contact the National Suicide Hotline 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 9/16/21 @ 10:15 a.m. - As a reminder, the Board of County Commissioners is seeking a volunteer to fill a vacancy on the Planning & Zoning Board. This is the perfect opportunity for a resident interested in learning more about the County's planning process to get involved. Volunteers are compensated for their time, as further explained below.
The vacancy will be for District One, however it is an At-Large position so the representative does not have to reside within that District. The Planning & Zoning Board reviews all requests for rezoning of property, zoning amendments, Comprehensive Plan text amendments, Land Use Map amendments, and amendments to Ordinances that affect the use and development of land. The Board submits written recommendations on these matters and submits them to the Board of County Commissioners for a final determination. The Board also hears appeals where it is alleged that there is an error in a decision made by the Planning Director or staff, as it relates to Zoning Codes or the Comprehensive Plan. The Board also comments on preliminary site plans and serves as the Local Planning Agency for Nassau County. The Board is made of up 11 members as follows:
Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of the month beginning at 6:00 p.m. Members serve three (3) year terms and are required to file a financial disclosure. Board members are provided a stipend of $75 per meeting and are reimbursed for mileage at rates set by the Federal General Services Administration. If you are interested in serving, please submit a resume to [email protected] by Friday, September 24th.
