![]() 6/22/21 @ 9:30 a.m. - Sunday, June 20th was the first day of summer. As such, we felt this would be a good time to remind residents and visitors about beach safety, particularly as it relates to rip currents. According to the National Oceanic & Atmosphere Administration (NOAA), "Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that are prevalent along the East, Gulf, and West coasts of the U.S., as well as along the shores of the Great Lakes. Moving at speeds of up to eight feet per second, rip currents can move faster than an Olympic swimmer. It is estimated that 100 people are killed by rip currents annually. If caught, in a rip current, don't fight it. Swim parallel to the shore and swim back to land at an angle". Below are some additional tips from the NOAA website:
Rip currents can be dangerous, but if you know your options, survey your situation, and stay calm, you can stay safe and continue to have fun in the surf, sand, and sun. The dune system protects the barrier island from waves, storm surge and heavy winds. Not only will adding additional vegetation further protect homes from severe weather, it will also provide additional habitat for wildlife. Fernandina Beach Parks and Rec Manager coordinated the event, with the help of Frank Hopf of the Dune Science Group. The City reached out to the County requesting use of the Road Department's jet vac truck to provide the initial watering of the newly planted vegetation. Lynda Bell, Executive Director for Keep Nassau Beautiful, stated that approximately 40 volunteers planted 1,700 native plants. Great job to everyone involved! -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer Nassau County Emergency Management is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Eta. Though this storm will not directly impact Nassau County, indirect impacts will include minor to moderate coastal flooding due to storm surge, as well as high tides and significant wind gusts.
