![]() On Saturday, March 28, 2015, the Nassau County Sheriff's Department and Nassau County Fire Rescue competed in the Battle of the Badges Charity Basketball Game at West Nassau High School to raise money for the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. This year's winner was Nassau County Fire Rescue. Congratulations to everyone who played! And a big thank you to the West Nassau High School Chick-fil-a Leadership Academy for sponsoring the event. A great time was had by everyone! We can't wait to hear how much money was raised for this wonderful cause. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office ![]() On Saturday, January 24, 2015, members of Nassau County Fire/Rescue and the Nassau County Sheriff's Office participated in a Boots & Badges Celebration Event at Whataburger in Yulee. The event was created to celebrate our local men and women in uniform and featured family-friendly activities such as face painting and a photo booth, as well as appearances from Sparky the Fire Dog and Whataguy. There were 250 adults and 72 children in attendance and each were given the opportunity to meet first responders and view the inside of public service vehicles such as fire trucks and police cars. All children 12 and under received a free kids meal from What-A-Burger, and 10 lucky kids received new bikes paid for by donations to Nassau County Fire-Rescue Professionals, Local Union #3101 benevolence fund. Thank you to Nassau County Fire/Rescue and the Nassau County Sheriff's Office for your community involvement and for providing our citizens with an opportunity to meet our local heroes. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office On Friday, February 6, 2015, Nassau County Fire/Rescue Station 30 and Tower Ladder 20 assisted the Yulee Middle School with their annual Egg Drop Experiment. The purpose of the experiment is to provide students with an opportunity to see Newton's laws of motion in action, and to see if they could defy nature by dropping an egg from the 90 foot tower without it breaking. Students were challenged to build a vehicle that the egg could survive in, and to form a hypothesis about its ability to protect the egg. Many spectators including the students, faculty, parents and members of the general public gathered to watch the experiment. Thank you Fire/Rescue for your community involvement and for providing the students with a location high enough to conduct their experiment.
-Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office ![]() To celebrate Halloween, County employees participated in a costume contest that was held as part of the Board of County Commissioner's annual United Way Campaign. Each participant was required to make a $5 donation to the United Way and then presented themselves to judges for a chance to win first and second place prizes. More than a dozen employees entered the contest and others came to show their support, and to see all the wonderful costumes which included a werewolf, several mental patients, a mad doctor, Malificent, and a witch. Some even came dressed up as Nassau County Property Appraiser, Mike Hickox, in various forms such as Business Mike and Casual Friday Mike. United Way Campaigns run from July 1 through June 30 of each year, however instead of just having one big event where employees are asked to pledge money, the County allows staff to hold various fundraising events throughout the year. Not only does this keep United Way in the forefront of everyone's mind, it encourages employee participation and raises even more money for the cause. Previous events include the annual golf tournament against the City of Fernandina Beach, chili cookoffs, book sales, and candy-grams for Valentine's Day. All of these events are funded by the employees and are no cost to the taxpayers. The Board of County Commissioner's Campaign continues to grow and has received platinum awards for their last two campaigns. The FY 2012/2013 campaign raised $8,345 and FY 2013/2014 raised $9,518. All of that money benefits those living in Northeast Florida. To learn more about the United Way and the programs they fund, please visit their website. -Sabrina Robertson Nassau County Manager's Office Daylight savings time ends on Sunday, November 2nd and Nassau County Fire Rescue would like to remind citizens to check the batteries in their smoke detectors. Having a working smoke alarm in your home cuts your chances of dying in house fire in half. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths result in homes with no smoke alarms, or in homes where the alarms are not working properly.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, only 30% of fires begin in the kitchen. It turns out that the most dangerous room in the house is the bedroom due to unattended candles, smoking in bed, and use of space heaters. You should never leave a space heater on while you are sleeping and should always keep the heater at least three feet away from bedding, curtains, and furniture. It is also recommended that smoke detectors be installed inside and outside of each bedroom and sleeping area, as well as on every level of your home. People who are hard of hearing should install special alarms with strobe lights and bed shakers. After changing your batteries, test each alarm using the test button. Be sure that each member of your household understands the meaning of the alarm, and how to evacuate safety. It is also a good idea to designate a meeting place outside of the home. After checking your alarms, consider checking the smoke detectors in your elderly neighbor's home or your parent's home. Most smoke alarms are installed on the ceiling and cannot be accessed without a ladder or stool, making it difficult for seniors to check safely. Do you know of someone that is in need of need smoke detectors but can't afford them? Nassau County Fire Rescue offers free smoke alarms to needy citizens residing in the unincorporated areas of the County. Simply fill out the attached application and return it to Fire/Rescue Headquarters located at 96160 Nassau Place, Yulee, FL 32097. If accepted, Fire Inspector Jerry Marrison will contact you to schedule a date and time for installation. For more information, you can reach Mr. Marrison at (904) 491-7525 or via email at [email protected]. -Sabrina Robertson Nassau County Manager's Office ![]() A group of Tiger Cub Scouts visited Nassau County Fire Rescue Station 30 on Monday, October 6th. The children were able to tour the station, climb aboard fire apparatus, and they met some of our local heroes. Tiger Cub Scout Volunteer, Mitch Davison, sent an e-mail to the Fire Chief thanking the staff for their hospitality. According to Mr. Davison, "The boys were very inquisitive, learned a lot, and had a great experience. The firemen that we met yesterday exhibited great passion to serve and help others in our community which is a great example for our young scouts. The citizens of Nassau County are in really good hands. Thank you so much for arranging our visit." The Firefighter/Paramedics on duty (pictured with Tiger Cub Scouts) are: Firefighter Michael Arnold, Engineer Tracy Weaver, Lieutenant Kelly Gunnell, and Engineer James Graf. -Sabrina Robertson Nassau County Manager's Office The City of Fernandina Beach and the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners hosted the 3rd annual charity golf tournament on Saturday, September 27th which raised $4,439 for the United Way of Northeast Florida.
