![]() 4/6/23 @ 9:00 a.m. - The National Association of Counties (NACo) has proclaimed April as National County Government Month. Each day this month, we will provide different facts about Nassau County, including information about its history, services provided and more. Today, we want to bring attention to all the wonderful services offered by the Nassau County Extension. This department is the result of a partnership between the County and the Institute of Food and Agriculture Services at the University of Florida, established by the Smith/Lever Act in 1914. The department provides free, research based information to residents in a variety of areas including horticulture, agriculture, family and consumer services, and 4-H Development. The County Extension's horticulture and agriculture divisions offer monthly classes on lawns and gardens, landscapes, and plants. They provide free soil samples to help you identify problems in your landscape and can diagnose plant disease for you at no-charge. They also send out monthly calendars to guide you on the proper times to plant, fertilize and prune trees, flowers, shrubs, vegetables, etc. Other services offered include pesticide certifications, plant sales, weed identification, and educating homeowners on Florida family landscaping and invasive species. The division of Family & Consumer Services helps residents achieve physical and financial health by providing researched based information on obesity, chronic disease, food, finances, housing, food safety, nutrition and more. They offer free courses on food nutrition, cooking, and money management. Another important service offered is assisting seniors with Medicare registration. They spend time with the senior going over all available options and helping the individual find the plan that works best for them. The 4-H Youth Development division works to develop young people who are empowered, confident, hard-working, responsible and compassionate and encourages development of life-long skills to exceed in life. They offer a large variety of programs, including but not limited to, summer camps, veterinary classes, horse camps, science-based courses, and classes on home economics such as cooking and sewing. If you haven't yet, be sure to sign up for the Extension's monthly newsletter to stay up-to-date on Extension programs and services. To sign up, email [email protected]. The National Association of Counties (NACo) has proclaimed April as National County Government Month. Each day this month, we will provide different facts about Nassau County, including information about its history, services provided and more. Today, we would like to tell you all about Nassau County Animal Services. Are you aware that the Board of County Commissioners, through its Animal Services Division, provides animal care and control for a majority of the County? (Nassau Humane Society provides animal control services within the limits of the City of Fernandina Beach, under a contract with the City government). Nassau County Animal Services protects people and property from the danger of disease and the nuisance of roaming, uncontrolled animals. They provide rescue for animals that are lost or trapped; investigate complaints of animal abuse; conduct cruelty investigations; transport injured animals (both domesticated and wild) safely and humanely to the appropriate animal care facility; and promote responsible pet ownership. The Board of County Commissioners also owns and operates an animal shelter to provide a safe place for homeless pets to be loved and cared for while waiting for adoption. Nassau County Animal Services' animal shelter is a no-kill shelter, meaning that they have a 90% or greater placement rate for the animals in their care. This is achieved through professionalism, compassion, commitment, and through community partnerships. In Fiscal Year 2021/2022, Nassau County Animal Services responded to 3,003 call for service. Additionally, 2,196 animals came into the Nassau County Animal Services shelter. This included stray, lost and surrendered animals. Of those, 1,492 animals were adopted into loving homes; 374 animals were reunited with their families; and 88 were transferred to rescues or other shelters to increase their chances of adoption. So next time you're considering a new pet, please visit Nassau County Animal Services to see what they have available. If you're not able to adopt but are interested in helping an animal in need, the shelter always needs volunteers. They have tons of volunteer opportunities including: dog walking, cat cuddling, kennel cleaning, washing linens, and more. You can also foster pets so they can have a nice place to stay while waiting on their permanent home, or you can take a pup out on a doggy date to get them some much needed time out of their kennels. Day One Nassau County was created in 1824 from Duval County and was named for the Duchy of Nassau in Germany. It has a total land area of 726 square miles, of which 649 square miles is land and 77 square miles is water. Within Nassau County are 3 municipalities, the City of Fernandina Beach and the Towns of Callahan and Hilliard. Each municipality has its own administration that serves its defined area. The largest municipality within the county is the City of Fernandina which is also the location of the county seat. Nassau County is governed by the five-member Nassau County Board of County Commissioners, who are elected to four-year terms by the voters. The terms are staggered so that either three or two commissioners (alternately) are up for election every two years. Next year, Nassau County will celebrate 200 years! The Board of County Commissioners is already planning a series of bicentennial celebrations across the county in 2024, ending with a large celebration in December 2024. We look forward to sharing news on these events in the coming months. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer ![]() 3/29/23 @ 9:00 a.m. - At the Monday, March 27th meeting, Ryan Tucker, Audit Partner with Purvis Gray, presented the annual audit for Fiscal Year 21/22 which ended on September 30, 2022. This outside firm spends about 4 weeks each year studying the Board's controls and processes to ensure they are appropriate and functioning properly. "There are five main objectives in this report that are required by Florida Statute. The most important objective is for us to issue an opinion on the County's financial statements". He then went on to say that "Nassau County has received an "Unmodified Opinion" which is the highest level of assurance that an audit firm can provide on a County's financial statements." He further explained that an unmodified opinion means that there are no modifications needed to the Board's controls and processes. Mr. Tucker also explained the 7 audit reports provided including reports on the Countywide statements, the Board of County Commissioners (stand alone) statements, and the statements on the five individual Constitutional Offices (Sheriff, Clerk of Courts, Tax Collector, Property Appraiser and Supervisor of Elections). Chairman Klynt Farmer stated, "This is a testament to the Clerk's Office and the Office of Management & Budget and a testament of who we are, working for the people we serve. It means a lot to the community". To view the presentation, please click here.
