Rainfall from Hurricane Irma and the nor’easter beforehand is still working its way down the watershed. Additionally, Hurricane Jose is in the Atlantic pushing water back onshore. This combination could extend flooding concerns for another 10-14 days in Nassau County. Previously flooded areas may see additional flooding and there could be new flooding in areas that have not yet been flooded. Residents along the St Mary’s River, Thomas Creek, and Lofton Creek should be extremely vigilant in watching for water level rise and evacuate before becoming stranded. If you have any questions, please contact Emergency Management at 904-548-0900. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 9/13/17 @ 1:45 p.m. - The School Board announced this morning that Nassau County schools will be closed tomorrow. Due to power outages, flooding or roads, school closings, etc., Administrative Offices will also be closed to the public tomorrow. This includes administrative departments under the Board of County Commissioners, the Tax Collector's Office, the Clerk's Office, and Supervisor of Elections. Public safety personnel, road and bridge employees and other county staff will continue to clear blocked roadways, address drainage issues and assist with the overall recovery process.
Please note that the landfill will be open their regular hours of 8am-5pm. Although the Property Appraisers Office will also be closed to the public, their staff will be out doing damage assessments. Residents can go directly to The Journey Church or Call the Emergency Operations Center 904-548-0900 for Assistance! -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 9/12/17 @ 7:00 p.m. - Due to the State of Emergency issued prior to the arrival of Hurricane Irma, the County will be able to hire a contractor to provide debris removal from county maintained roads. While it may take a few weeks to issue a contract and get a schedule for pick up, there are things you can be doing now to ensure you are ready.
Begin gathering debris and place it in two piles in the county right of way; one pile for yard debris (limbs, palm frawns, etc) and one pile for construction debris (fencing, shingles, drywall, etc.). REMEMBER THAT THE DEBRIS CANNOT BE BAGGED! PER FEMA GUIDELINES, THE CONTRACTOR MUST BE ABLE TO SEE WHAT IS IN THE PILES OR IT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AT THE COLLECTION CENTERS. BAGGED DEBRIS, MIXED PILES OF DEBRIS, AND DEBRIS IN TRASH CANS WILL NOT BE PICKED UP. FEMA does not allow the county to pick up debris on private roads so if you reside on a private road or in a private subdivision, you will be responsible for removing debris. Additionally, the County will not be providing debris pickup for commercial properties or apartment complexes. Nassau County residents can drop-off their debris for free to a county collection site (location and hours of operation to be announced) with proof of residency. Those residing in private subdivisions will need to consult with their HOA to determine if they will provide cleanup for your neighborhood. CONTRACTORS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO USE THE DROP OFF LOCATIONS. Residents can also burn yard debris in accordance with burn guidelines issued by the Florida Dept of Agriculture. Note: if you live in the city or town limits, you will need to contact your municipality directly about debris removal. The county contractor will only remove debris from the county limits on county maintained roads. Additional info to follow regarding collection schedules and debris drop off sites. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 9:17/17 @ 5:10 p.m. - Below is a Press Release from Emergency Management containing updated information about power outages, shelters, impassable roads, closing of schools, etc. There is information available from OkefenokeeElectric at this time.
NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 09/12/2017 Nassau County Emergency Management Contact: Dave Richardson (904) 548-0945 or (904) 654-5858 email: [email protected] Facebook: NassauEM twitter: Nassau EM Updates to Road Closures, Schools, Shelters Power Restoration, Curfew, Hospital As damage assessment reports continue to flow in from the aftermath of Irma, we are receiving additional reports of road closures due to flooding and trees down. I am attaching a separate file with that list (two pages) along with this update. County officials have terminated the order for a curfew effective today. There will be NO curfew in place in Nassau County. Schools will remain closed tomorrow, Wednesday, September 13th and a decision will be made shortly after 5pm today if schools will reopen Thursday. Power to schools is the determining factor. Baptist Medical Center Nassau has reopened for all services with the exception of elective surgeries. Only two shelters remain open; Callahan Middle School, which has also been pet friendly. There are 30 people still at this shelter. Hilliard Middle-Senior special needs services shelter also remains open and has 62 occupants as of 3pm this afternoon. All other shelters have closed. Emergency Management officials are working to open a transition shelter for those that still need temporary housing. We will provide that information to you once preparations are complete. Power outages are still a major concern. Here is the latest information. Power provided by Florida Public Utility to Amelia Island is still out. FPU has provided some limited power through repairs to its transmission line. While there are almost 11,000 customers without power, if their repairs hold FPU believes they can begin to spread out power restoration more quickly throughout the Island. Florida Power & Light has made significant progress in restoring power to parts of the county west of the ICW. While power to 11,000 customers remains out, FPL has been reducing outage numbers from more than 20,000 yesterday to almost half that number today. FPL hopes to continue a rapid restoration in Nassau County the rest of this week. Fuel supplies in Nassau County appear to be holding. Beginning at 3pm today, the Emergency Operations Center will provide free water for residents to pick up from the Callahan Fairgrounds. A POD will be set up and Nassau citizens can grab water from the POD. A frequent problem after a disaster is “fly-by-night’ contractors who take deposits before starting work or who take final payment before finishing a job. Service scams all have the same target; your wallet. Be cautious of repair businesses or individuals who: • Solicit door-to-door • Arrive in unmarked vehicles • Have a post office box or temporary address • Claim they are from another county or state and are in the area solely to help disaster victims or, • Claim that they were doing work in the area and noticed that your home or business needed repair. The Nassau County Chief Prosecutor for the State Attorney’s office Donna Thurston has promised to prosecute to the fullest extent anyone involved in property or personal crimes and anyone involved in fraudulent business practices or scams. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 9/12/17 @ 4:20 p.m. - Filing an insurance claim can be difficult for both individuals and businesses.
