At the Board of County Commissioner's meeting held this morning, the Board approved the attached Resolution extending the Burn Ban through April 26, 2017. Please note that the Special Meeting scheduled for tomorrow to extend the Burn Ban has been cancelled since this issue was handled today at the Board's regular meeting.

4/13/17 @ 3:35 p.m. - At a Special Meeting held today, the Board of County Commissioners approved the attached Resolution extending the Burn Ban through April 20, 2017. Another Special Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. for the Board to determine whether or not the Burn Ban will need to be extended. By Florida Statute, Section 252.38(3)(5), Burn Bans can only be declared locally for seven days at a time, but can be extended as needed in seven day increments.
The Burn Ban prohibits burning of yard debris and trash. It does not pertain to cooking on attended and monitored barbeque equipment or to permits issued by the Division of Forestry. If you need to report someone for burning, please call 9-1-1. Questions related to the Burn Ban should be directed to Fire/Rescue Headquarters at (904) 530-6600. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 4/10/17 @ 4:10 p.m. - At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 9:00 a.m., the Board will be recognizing all agencies, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and individuals who provided assistance during the Bryceville Wildfires which began on Wednesday, March 22, 2017.
Not only did dozens of government agencies and emergency personnel respond quickly to assist in containing the fire, many individuals and businesses in the community showed support by providing food and water to the first responders, donating food for displaced animals, and providing emergency shelter to families and pets. The way in which the community came together was truly remarkable and should be commemorated. Any person, business, not-for-profit organization, or government agency that provided assistance is encouraged to attend, as well as any person from the public that would like to express gratitude to the emergency personnel that worked during this event. Assistant Chief Scott Hemmingway was in attendance and notified the Board that the Florida Forest Service stated that despite having received rain this week, the burn threat is the same as it was the day the fire began in Bryceville two weeks ago. They also indicated that we would need several days of rain to bring burn index back down to a low threat level.

If you need to report someone burning yard debris, please call 9-1-1. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office A Special Meeting of the Board of County Commissioners has been scheduled for Friday, April 7, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. for the Board to consider extending the Burn Ban. Although some rain is expected this evening, it is anticipated that the amount of rain will not be enough to fully saturate the ground and will not have a drastic effect on the current Fire Danger Index.
A copy of the extended Burn Ban will be posted here following Friday's meeting. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 3/31/17 @ 5:00 p.m. - The Board of County Commissioners met at approximately 4:40 p.m. and implemented a local burn ban due to multiple fires the last few weeks and the current windy weather conditions. The burn ban prohibits burning of yard debris and trash. It does not pertain to cooking on attended and monitored barbeque equipment or to permits issued by the Division of Forestry.
The burn ban will remain in effect through April 7, 2017. At that time, the Board will consider if the burn ban needs to be extended for an additional seven (7) day period. For current information related to the fire, please visit Emergency Management's website or follow them on FaceBook or Twitter. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 3/28/17 @ 3:45 p.m. - Nassau County Emergency Management has provided a Press Release containing a timeline of events related to the Bryceville wildfire. This synopsis includes information on when the Florida Fire Service was notified, as well as information on the number of responding agencies, the implementation of a command post at Station 60, and a detail of equipment used to contain the fire. As of yesterday afternoon, the fire was at 95% containment and rescue personnel were still working to mop up hot spots between 50-75' in from the fire's edge and around all the structures in the fire area. That work is expected to continue throughout the week.

3/23/17 @ 4:30 p.m. - Nassau County Emergency Management has indicated that the evacuation order has been lifted, power has been restored, and residents can now return to their homes. Active flare-ups and smoldering areas are not near residential structures. Emergency personnel will continue to work through the day and night until all fires are out. If you are not a resident of this area, please stay away! Fire is still burning and there is still a large amount of first responders and heavy equipment in the vicinity. Extra people and cars make it difficult for them to navigate the area. We appreciate your understanding. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 3/23/17 @ 3:20 p.m. - We have just been notified that residents of Garfield Road can now return home as fires in this area have been cleared and power has been restored. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office ![]() 3/23/17 @ 2:50 p.m. - An emergency briefing was held at 2:00 p.m. at the command center. Officials are indicating that the fire is still only 65% contained and is spreading across 696 acres. 19 sheds/barns and 2 homes have been completely destroyed and 6 other structures have been severely damaged. The Florida Fire Service now has 10 bull dozers on site digging ditches and laying sand in an effort to further contain this fire. Firefighter efforts are expected to continue for several days as wind and low humidity are still an issue. Agencies from across Northeast Florida have provided first responders and equipment to assist in this effort. Please continue to be patient! Emergency personnel are doing everything in their power to save Nassau County residents and property. The Bryceville Baptist Church is still providing a safe place for displaced residents and Callahan Baptist Church is on standby to open if needed. In addition, the Nassau County Extension Office located at the fairgrounds has now established a shelter for displaced residents and their pets. They are also accepting pet and livestock donations. Donations of food and water are being accepted at the Bryceville Library. Lastly, on behalf of all the emergency personnel, thank you to everyone for your kind donations of water, food and supplies, and to those individuals and businesses who have offered to board pets and livestock during this tragic time. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's office |
