2/8/23 @ 8:45 a.m. - Late last week, several new employees of the Road Department participated in Maintenance of Traffic training to learn about guidelines related to temporary traffic control during a construction project. During this training, employees focused on flagging operations and were able to test their knowledge in a mock work zone set up at the Hilliard Road Department site.
Flagger training is one of several areas covered in the Road Department's new hire training. Other training activities for new hires include learning to operate small power equipment such as chainsaws, pole saws, and other tools needed for construction maintenance, as well as overview of the County's Safety Policy. The County enhanced its new hire training last year to provide additional guidance to entry-level Road Department personnel. During the 21/22 Fiscal Year, the County also established an Apprenticeship Program designed to give Road Department employees a clear defined career path with opportunities to advance quickly. These individuals can begin their career as a Maintenance Helper and within 3-4 years, advance to a Maintenance Operator with the ability to operate heavy equipment. This is the perfect opportunity for someone wishing to learn a trade and make a career in Nassau County. Twenty-two dirt roads totaling 29,145 feet (roughly 5.5 miles) were upgraded to a newly paved surface utilizing the chip seal process. When the repetitive maintenance of dirt roads becomes timely and costly and/or driver safety is compromised, chip seal is a great option because it’s similar to asphalt in durability and appearance, but much less expensive. The chip seal surface treatment consists of an application of heated asphalt liquid, followed by a layer of crushed rock with a roller to create a smooth surface. Chip seal roads enhance public safety by providing good skid resistance, an anti-glare surface during wet weather, and an increased reflective surface for night driving. During adoption of the Fiscal Year 22/23 budget, the Board allocated $900,000 for the Chip Seal Program. This will allow an additional fifteen roads totaling 17,975 feet to be resurfaced this Fiscal Year. Roads identified for chip seal this Fiscal Year include:

The light was operational as of approximately 8:30 yesterday evening. However, the sidewalk at the entrance of the Goodwill shopping plaza is still closed as employees from the Traffic Division will be back on site today working on some remaining issues. Please continue to drive cautiously while in the area. We will let everyone know when the issue is completely resolved. 9/7/22 @ 4:35 p.m. - The County's Traffic Division has been working all day to resolve an issue with the red light at Barnwell Road and State Road 200. They have been and will continue working on this until it is repaired. Right now, the light is in flashing mode for eastbound and westbound lanes. Motorists are urged to use caution in the area. The Nassau County Sheriff's Office has been to the site and has installed safety cones as a slowing mechanism. They have also added cones to the turn lanes. PLEASE DO NOT MOVE THEM! You will still be able to turn (with caution) from the main eastbound/westbound lanes. Without a functioning light, there is no turn light, thus there's no turn lane. Anyone seen moving or altering the cones may be issued a citation by the Sheriff's Office. Please note that the Sheriff's Office are experts in traffic control and have implemented measures that based on their knowledge and expertise will increase motorist safety. Please trust their judgement! Lastly, our Traffic Division staff have been working tirelessly all day trying to resolve the problem. If you see them, please be kind. They are hot and tired and doing everything they can to resolve this matter as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience. We will notify everyone as soon as the light has been restored and is functioning properly. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 8/17/22 @ 8:40 a.m. - The Nassau County Road Department has several entry level job opportunities available.
