The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that 1.5 million Americans, and at least 5 million people worldwide, have a form of lupus, many of which have yet to be diagnosed. There is a deep, unmet need worldwide to educate the public about lupus and to support individuals and families affected by lupus. Unfortunately, medical research efforts are under-funded in comparison to diseases of comparable magnitude and severity. Further, many physicians worldwide are unaware of the symptoms and health affects of lupus, causing people to suffer for many years before they obtain a correct diagnosis and medical treatment.
At the Monday, May 8th meeting, the Board approved Resolution No. 2023-100 proclaiming Wednesday, May 10th as World Lupus Day in Nassau County. Representatives from the World Lupus Foundation were in attendance for the reading of the Resolution and to accept it.
This year's theme is "Make Lupus Visible". Today, residents are encouraged to learn more about lupus so you can show support to those who are affected by it. You can sign the World Lupus Day awareness pledge created to raise awareness and to encourage additional funding for lupus research. You can also show your support today by wearing purple.
