![]() 5/24/24 @ 2:05 p.m. The County launched Nassau Florida Vision 2050, a collaborative 18-month process involving local leaders, residents, businesses, and stakeholders to shape the future of our community. The project kicked off with extensive community engagement and a review of the County’s plans, studies, and existing conditions. Based on this input, draft “Community Building Blocks” have been developed, outlining core values that will guide recommendations and strategies for the Vision plan. Residents, business owners, and other community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on the Building Blocks through a new survey. The survey asks respondents to: ● Identify which values resonate with them. ● Describe their ideas for what these values could look like in practice. Once participants take the quick 5-question survey, they will be entered in a raffle to win a local prize or experience in the County. At the May 15, 2024 meeting, the Board subsequently approved Resolution No. 2024-092 amending the schedule of regular evening meetings, changing the order of business on the agenda, and revising the Rules of Decorum.
Beginning on June 3, 2024, the Board of County Commissioner meetings on the second and fourth Mondays will now start at 5:00 p.m., adjusted from the previous time of 6:00 p.m. Additionally, the Order of Business was modified to move general non-agenda public comment to the end of the meeting. As a reminder, comments can only be for items under the authority of the Board of County Commissioners and the time limit is three minutes. The Rules of Decorum were updated to clarify guidelines for addressing the Board, including that all public participants wishing to address the Board shall complete a speaker card and present the card to the Deputy Clerk prior to the agenda item on which they wish to speak. The revisions also include new language/rules the speaker must follow when addressing the Board including a requirement that comments be directed to the Board as a whole (not individual Commissioners or staff) and that speakers not use abusive or obscene language when addressing the Board. A copy of the revised Resolution can be found at https://nassaufl.co/BOCCMeetingResolution. Part of this initiative includes an Employee Recognition Program in which employees can nominate co-workers who have demonstrated Nassau County's Customer Care Standards and/or has provided exceptional performance beyond established duties and responsibilities. At the Wednesday, May 15th meeting, the Board recognized JD Morgan and Steven Hallmark as our new Employees of the Quarter. Steven Hallmark was selected for continually going above and beyond to ensure that employees and citizens are satisfied with his work. One particular instance was when he was installing sports netting at the Yulee Ballpark. Since installing netting isn't a typical task of facilities employees, Steven researched proper installation methods to ensure it was being done correctly. Upon installation, Steven noticed that the netting wasn't the proper size, so he cut and weaved the netting back together to make sure of proper fitting. He always takes great pride in his work and want to ensure that the product Facilities Maintenance delivers is professional. J.D. Morgan went above and beyond working on a transfer switch for the generator at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Since the part had to be specially built to fit our needs, JD kept in constant contact with the contractor, to ensure the County would not get pushed back in installation. As soon as JD received word that the part had arrived, he ensured all prep work was completed, made sure all vendors were aware of the installation dates, and communicated to the internal departments about the shut down. The coordination between JD, his crew, 2 outside contractors and two IT departments went off flawlessly thanks to JD's attention to detail, work ethic, and leadership. Please join us in congratulating Steven and JD on their accomplishments. We are proud of them and the outstanding service they provide to the residents and their fellow co-workers and are glad to have them on the Nassau County team. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 5/22/24 at 3:30 p.m.- The Fernandina Beach Library is hosting a series of adult programs in celebration of summer. The first is the 2024 Coordinated Mobility Plan Survey. Input received will help planners better understand the community's transportation needs and obstacles, and will help them to identify solutions to reduce mobility gaps and improve transportation services through the region of Northeast Florida. The second survey, Customer Roadway Safety Survey, is designed to help the NEFRC and Jacksonville Transit Authority (JTA) gain insight on the community's experiences related to roadway safety and JTA Services. The survey is part of JTA's commitment to enhancing safety on roadways, specifically for JTA services, as they strive to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries. Each survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. Both surveys are open through the end of July. If you have any questions, please contact Summer Jones, Transportation Disadvantaged Coordinator of the Northeast Florida Regional Council at (904) 279-0880 ext. 124 or via e-mail at [email protected]. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 5/22/24 @ 3:00 p.m. - On Monday, May 20, 2024, the Board of County Commissioners hosted a Groundbreaking Ceremony in celebration of the upcoming construction of a new Station 90. The new station will replace the structure that is currently being used with a new, modern facility. Following a competitive process, the Board awarded the bid for design/construction to ACON Construction Company, Inc. The new station will consist of 10,891 square feet and will feature four bays with an engine, rescue unit, tanker and a brush truck. It will also contain 11 sleeping quarters, four and a half restrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and an exercise room. The Groundbreaking Event began with the pledge and then a welcome message by Chairman John Martin. He stated, "The first duty of government is the protection of its residents. Proactive planning has allowed us to further the capabilities of Nassau County Fire Rescue by acquiring new personnel and equipment, and building modern stations that will serve the community well for many years to come. We appreciate the brave men and women of Nassau County Fire Rescue and are pleased to provide them with a new station that meets current national standards and provides a safe, comfortable space for them to use when not responding to calls." Nassau County Fire Chief Brady Ridgon also spoke, providing some background on the project and his overall excitement. He indicated that construction will commence before the end of May 2024 and is estimated to be completed by the Spring of 2025. He also discussed the large territory the Nassau County Fire Rescue covers across the County, adding that "In 2023, NCFR responded to a total of 11,512 calls for service. Of those, about 300 were in the territory covered by Station 90. That may not sound like a lot but it's important to consider that Station 50 is just over 12 miles away; Station 60 is just over 14 miles away; and Station 40 is just over 15 miles away. It takes time to travel those distances and when an emergency is happening, time is the enemy." Upon concluding, Chief Rigdon thanked the Commissioners, County Manager Taco Pope, Assistant County Manager Marshall Eyerman, and Deputy County Manager/County Engineer Robert Companion for their support. "I look forward to this much needed improvement which will provide better conditions for our personnel which will translate to them continuing to provide the best possible service to Nassau County." Commissioner Jeff Gray, Commissioner Klynt Farmer, and County Manager Taco Pope also spoke briefly about the benefit of a new station and to thank our public safety personnel for all they do. Following the presentations, the Commissioners, NCFR and other management staff participated in the ceremonial "breaking of the ground". It was a great event and we appreciate everyone who joined us. We look forward to celebrating with the community again next year at a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer ![]() 5/22/24 @ 10:00 a.m. - The Nassau County Library and Nassau County Extension have partnered to bring a Landscape Matters to the Fernandina Library.
